As an Atlanta SEO company, we are always analyzing the trends in search engine algorithms, doing split-testing, and making conjectures as to what can help your website achieve better search engine rankings. One way in which we do this is by looking at examples from companies who consistently achieve great ranking results. One such company is Wikipedia. For those of you who have been living under a rock and don’t know what Wikipedia is, suffice it to say it is a non-profit organization that provides a free online encyclopedia. While most of us know what Wikipedia is and maybe even use it on a daily basis, SEO experts are rigorously analyzing their SEO strategies. What this company has accomplished as far as search engine optimization is truly amazing. They have over 77,300,000 indexed pages in Google and more than 680 million visitors annually by April 2008. The most amazing feat? 96.6% of Wikipedia’s pages are ranking on the first page of Google. (source: http://www.thegooglecache.com/white-hat-seo/966-of-wikipedia-pages-rank-in-googles-top-10/) If it sounds like no big deal to you, rest assured, it is! Let’s break down how they structure their sites so we can put together a similar SEO plan.
While local (geo-targeting) SEO strategies may differ, we can learn how to apply some unique techniques from studying their overall execution. Meaning, the examples and information given below could be applied to both “Search Engine Optimization” and “Atlanta SEO Firm”.
Keywords In Title Tags
Wikipedia is extremely consistent, and the keyword you’ve searched on is almost always in the title tag of each page. For example, if you typed in “Search Engine Optimization”, the Title tag that comes up is “Search engine optimization – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia”. This applies to both long tail keyword phrases and broad phrases.
Content Matches Title Tag
If you search a very broad phrase in Wikipedia, the resulting page you land on will be lengthy and contain very general information about your topic. For example, if you were to search for “Flowers”, you’d see a resulting page that is broken down into general subcategories such as “Morphology”, “Development”, “Floral Function”, etc. If you were to search on a more specific keyword phrase, the resulting page would have less content and be aimed more specifically at your search topic. For example, if you were to search “Hibiscus”, the page contains information strictly relating to the Hibiscus flower. Make sure to match your content with your keywords…if the keyword is broad, have broad and relevant content. If your keyword is specific, have specific content. Common sense, right?
Consistent Branding In Title Tags
In every Wikipedia title tag, the phrase “Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia” is present, AFTER the keyword or keyword phrase. Not only do they put precedence on the keyword by making it first, they consistently brand their organization. If someone were to search “seo wiki”, the search engines will know to place “Wikipedia” at the top of their search results based on this title tag branding strategy.
Extensive Internal Linking
Wikipedia wrote the book on internal linking. Internal linking serves a few purposes…the most important purpose is to create better page rankings and page relevancy for SEO. Internal links create relevancy between pages, increase a visitor’s time on a site (because they usually jump from one page to another internal link to read more about a topic), and allows new pages to get indexed quicker.
Alt Tags For Internal Links Match Title Tags On Target Pages
That’s a mouthful! Basically, if there is a link on Page A to Page B, the link’s alt text will contain the EXACT keyword for Page B. This maximizes content relevance. If the alt tag for the link, the name of the link, the target page’s title tag, and the content within the target page all match up, it will receive a higher relevancy score which is crucial to search engine’s algorithms.
Header tags improve your SEO efforts, simple as that. Many times the bots will scan the header tags before scanning additional content. Using header tags that are keyword optimized will not only improve your SEO strategies, they will make your site more user-friendly.
Original and Substantial Content
The search engine’s love consistent and original content. By creating unique articles in mass amounts, the odds are in your favor that you’ll rank higher. The average length of a Wikipedia page is substantial, and according to Wikipedia, they are seeing 8,222 new articles added each day. While no one can make guarantees that this exact strategy will yield the same results for you, it’s a pretty good conjecture to make. As a Search Engine Optimization company, we believe by applying some of the basic principles in this article, you too can experience better search results.
