Nearly everything about search engine optimization has changed over the past two or so years. As a highly trusted Atlanta SEO firm, we know the importance of link building – and how it has changed dramatically from a few years ago. Used to be all you had to do was join up with a few link exchange sites, trade links with other webmasters (whether the sites linking to your site were relevant or not), write articles for submission to article directories like Ezine or Go Articles, and presto! you could achieve a higher ranking. Do those same things today, and you’ll likely find your website at the bottom of the heap. 2014 link building is not about quantity, it’s about quality and relevancy.
Creating inbound links used to be fairly easy in the old days; today, it’s a lot of hard work. That being said, it’s work you have to do if you want to rank highly in the search engine results pages for your most important keywords and search terms.
Essentially, the links pointing to the pages of your website should be relevant, and from a trusted or authority site. For instance, if you sell designer perfume or fragrance products, there isn’t much benefit in having incoming links from tire manufacturers or insurance companies. It’s all about relevancy. Collecting links from cosmetic and essential oils companies would be much more to your advantage.
Having inbound links from a handful of .edu and .gov sites helps as well, as most of these sites are heavyweights in terms of trust and authority.
One easy way to create a few good inbound links: list your website on directories including Google and Yahoo! Also consider listing it on DMOZ.
How can you create a few quality backlinks in your spare time? Guest post on popular relevant blogs that get a lot of traffic. Link to your pages on social media, and invite followers/friends to “share” or retweet those links and posts.
While link building is an entirely different animal today and it does require more effort, the rewards are definitely worth the effort!
