Our experience as a reputable Atlanta web design company has taught us lots of things – for one, the process of designing a website isn’t an exact science! While there are some basic principles that should be followed, how a website is designed depends largely on the industry and what will appeal to your target audience. That being said, there are a few website design mistakes that you (or your designer) should avoid at all costs:
Lengthy blocks of text. Who wants to read a long expanse of content that seems endless? Nobody – especially online, where attention spans are even shorter than in the physical world. Smaller chunks led by subheadings are much more effective – and more likely to be read by users.
Navigation that isn’t intuitive. Difficult navigation is the fastest way to have your user hitting the back button! Make it simple for anyone who visits your site to find his or her way around, even a first-time visitor. Similar links should be grouped under headings; finding the ‘home’ page should be easy as well.
Flash video that plays automatically. AR-R-G-G-GH!! This is great if you want users to pull their hair out. Who wants to be held hostage while a 20 or 30-second introduction video plays? Make the video optional; otherwise, it’s likely you’ll lose a substantial number of visitors.
Content that looks like ads. Today, internet users are savvy; they’ve developed blindness for anything that remotely looks like a block or banner ad. Make sure your content is NOT formatted in a way that even slightly resembles an ad.
Search box not located in a conspicuous place. Your search box should be super-easy to find, not located halfway down the sidebar. Users want to find what they’re looking for pronto, so make your search box hard to miss.
