How many times have you looked at ratings and reviews when searching online for a product or service yourself? Whether a company has an average 3-star rating or 5-star rating does make a difference – and what other customers say about your business in their reviews is far more likely to influence potential customers than you ever could yourself. As a trusted Atlanta SEO firm, we wanted to enlighten businesses regarding the importance of good business reviews for higher search engine ranking, and attracting more customers.
You probably understand how good client reviews praising your company, product, or service influences the decisions potential customers make – but what about local SEO optimization? How are online reviews connected with Google or search results?
Google’s top priority is delivering the most relevant, useful results to users who search the web. Google Local is a good place to start, but having positive reviews on other sites helps your local SEO even more. As with link building strategies, quality trumps quantity. It’s much better for your business (and your local search ranking) to have a few 5-star reviews than to have dozens of 2- or 3-star reviews.
Too much at once is NOT a good thing when it comes to business reviews. A dozen reviews over one or two days may look a bit “fishy” to Google, who may think it’s spammy reviews (or reviews you may have even paid for, which you should never do). Don’t be aggressive in asking for reviews, but DO request that clients who are satisfied and happy with your product/service leave a review on popular sites in your area.
What do business reviews have to do with your SEO strategy? Plenty. Today, Google is in hot pursuit of companies that deliver the most beneficial results for local searches. How your business is perceived and what people think about it is critical in how they deliver results when a user performs a search. Essentially, a business with a high number of QUALITY reviews (high star ranking) will receive more traffic, as business listings including reviews are more credible in Google’s eyes, and therefore receive more clicks. When you have highly-rated reviews and great customer testimonials, you have strong social proof. To the search engines, your business is one that can be trusted.
Ready to start collecting business reviews? Always do it the natural way, and never offer money, gifts, or other incentives for people to review your product/service. Also, don’t request employees, relatives, or friends review your business. If your products/services are outstanding, getting reviews will be easy with a little encouragement or suggestion to loyal customers.
