We’re going to debunk a few of these below, so that you can avoid critical mistakes and use social media to your best advantage.
Posting as much as possible is good. Not necessarily! Your fans and followers will appreciate a single quality post far more than lots of posts that are just “thrown out there.” The content you share should inform, engage, and sometimes, entertain. No one wants to be bombarded with posts – particularly those that are promotional.
I can just ignore negative comments. WRONG. Negative comments can ruin your business’s reputation online. Respond to your followers whether they say something good, or bad. It’s important that you address any negativity right away – and in many cases, responding to negative comments can actually make the person who made the comment see your company in a more positive light.
Content should be focused on your company, products, or services. Nope. While a portion of your posts should be related to your company, it is critical to engage your followers and fans in a way that shows you’re human, and interested in them as well. Blatant promotion in every post will only frustrate your followers, and possibly turn many of them away. Try to stay balanced, and promote your company only about 20% of the time.
My customers don’t use social media. What? They absolutely DO. Nearly 3/4 of adults in the U.S. use social media, and while the platforms they use differ according to their interests/needs, they do use social media. As a business owner, it’s vital that you find out which platforms your customers use most, whether it’s Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, or Google+.
I have to use all of the social networking sites. While it’s a good idea to focus on two or three, it’s nearly impossible for anyone to use all of the social networking sites and do so successfully. If you know for a fact that much of your audience hangs out on Facebook, go for it. Consider your message, and do a little testing to see which platforms seem to get the most response from your efforts.
