A couple of months ago, McDonald’s began serving all day breakfast, a huge relief to customers who before couldn’t drive up to the drive-thru at 11 a.m. and expect to get a sausage biscuit or Egg McMuffin! So, what does this have to do with Atlanta companies who market their businesses online? A lot, as you’re about to see!
Why did McDonald’s make this change? They listened to their customers.
The first step in running a successful business is really listening to your customers, which shouldn’t be surprising. McDonald’s customers wanted to be able to order a Sausage McMuffin or hash browns any time they craved breakfast food, whether at noon or 8:00 at night. What are the business lessons here? Really listen to your customers whether they’re praising you or have an issue – and ASK them what they want via surveys on your website, emails, social media, etc.
After you listen, deliver
Once you know what your customers really want, it’s vital you give it to them. It may seem beyond your capability from a financial standpoint, or even a challenge otherwise – but when a large portion of your target customers have demands, you need to work through all of the challenges and figure out how you can deliver. Your business will be more successful for your efforts, and customers will appreciate it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Shout your news to the world
Once you’ve figured out how to deliver what customers want or you have a new promotion (new hours, new product or service, expansions/improvements to existing products), make a big deal about it. If you ever turn on the television, you know McDonald’s made sure everyone on the planet knew they were making the change to serve all-day breakfast. Consider a micro-website for your new promotion, or develop a social media marketing campaign dedicated specifically to the promotion.
What’s your competition doing? Staying on top of trends is critical
No doubt McDonald’s had been eyeing the competition to see how all day breakfast was going over at Sonic and other restaurants offering breakfast menu items all day long. As a business, you should do the same. Keep a keen eye out on your competitors so you know what they’re doing. If a competitor’s website ranks higher than yours, find out why by looking at the keywords they’re using, the type of traffic they receive, and what backlinks are coming into their website. There are various reports on domain statistics that make it possible for you to “spy” on the competition.
We can all learn from McDonald’s move to serve breakfast all day in terms of listening to what customers want, and delivering. Without customers, why bother?
