Although as Atlanta website designers we don’t like to make a practice of “knocking” our competition, we have to be honest and tell the truth – some web designers simply suck! And, sometimes it’s really, really hard to find a web designer that doesn’t suck. On one level, there are people who claim to be web designers who are only capable at a very basic level, while on the other hand, there are some developers who are probably highly capable, but for other reasons just don’t deliver the results a client wants, and deserves.
What are some of the signs that the web designer you have chosen may suck? Here are just a few indications:
It seems like a lot of the things you want “aren’t possible.” While there are a few things that are not possible, most are. When a website designer tells you that something is not possible, in the majority of situations it will be because he/she doesn’t know how to do it.
Your got your designer at a bargain price. Maybe you’re proud of the fact that you only paid a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand, but there is probably a reason for that. Most who offer extremely “cheap” rates lack many of the skills and knowledge that seasoned website designers have. A highly skilled designer values his or her time and skill, and will never quote you $200 for a complete web design!
Your designer recommends plugins for everything. Plugins are great, and most websites have a few active plugins, particularly WordPress sites. However, it’s vital that your web designer knows how to code, understands how websites function, and how it all flows on the internet in terms of search engines crawling your site, ranking, etc. Your designer should be able to make your website not only look amazing, but functional as well.
Your site’s finished, now what do you do? What? Your designer didn’t explain how to use your site, how to edit or make changes, add a blog post, change an image, add a page? The truth is, if your web designer tries to maintain control of your website and doesn’t educate you as to how to use it, it may be a simple case of him or her not wanting to lose you as a client. As a website owner, you should know how to use your own website!
