At EBB Web Design, our Atlanta digital marketing professionals want to help local businesses achieve the highest visibility possible online. Other than having a highly-ranked website, citations are hugely important, and a key component of Google’s ranking algorithms. If you’re not quite sure what citations are and how it works, we’ll give you a little lesson below.
Basically, citations are “mentions” of your local business on the Internet. These mentions don’t necessarily need to link to your website in order to help you get “found” when someone is searching locally for your services. Citations typically include your business name and address, such as what would be found in the online Yellowpages or on well-established and trusted sites such as Superpages.com. Other sites including Foursquare, Yelp, and directories that are focused locally such as Yahoo’s regional directory are good places to get citations.
Getting “mentions” in business directories and local bogs is vital to helping local businesses rank higher, and helps prove credibility to search engines. Citations are also useful in industries that are less competitive locally and businesses that often do not have a website, such as electricians or plumbers. Essentially, citations work to validate that a company or service provider is truly a member of the local community, particularly when you have citations in a city business index or Chamber of Commerce.
Data aggregators are a great place to build citations, and include Factual, Acxiom, and Infogroup. Regardless of where your business citations are listed, uniformity is key. Your business name, physical address, telephone number, and other data should be exactly the same from one citation to the next, further validating the search engines’ “trust” that you do actually exist.
Citations may sound a bit confusing, but it is actually a very simple way to improve search engine rankings locally, and be found by your target audience online.
