As Atlanta SEO professionals who have seen the changes in search engine optimization over the past four or five years, we know what worked in 2011 differs enormously from what works today. If you’re still using tactics that worked a few years ago, you’ve probably noticed your website has slipped a little (or even a lot) in terms of ranking. What are the top SEO trends today? We’ve shared a few of the most vital trends below.
Content is the key driver of search engine rankings. Content marketing and SEO were terms that were nearly interchangeable last year, and still are. In order to achieve significant visibility in the search engines, distribution of high-quality content is key.
Is your website optimized for mobile SEO and user intent? If not, it’s likely to fail. Google places a lot of weight on mobile usability – and sites that generate errors for mobile users are often penalized by the search engine giant. You can track how your website performs on mobile devices in Google Webmaster. Long-tail keyword searches have become much more common, indicating user intent. Your website and content should be tailored in a way that provides a great mobile experience, and meets user intent.
Links are important, but citations and brand mentions will become just as powerful. Brand mentions and citations are not typically “manipulated” like many links are. Everyone knows that in the past, link building was a practice that was abused. Gather a handful of quality, relevant, and legitimate links in addition to citations and brand mentions, and you’ll see results.
Social signals are growing in importance. Facebook, Twitter – social networks are hugely popular, and search engines (Google in particular) “listen” to social signals – that is, the number of likes, shares, re-tweets, etc., that videos, blog articles, and other content get from these sites.
Essentially, SEO no longer consists primarily of keyword optimization of pages and inbound links, but instead is focused on strong content that’s original and meets the needs of users, along with participation in social media. As we’ve said in the past, success online is all about putting the needs of potential clients first, and this includes in your SEO and content marketing efforts.
