The end of September brought about a new algorithm update from Google, called Hummingbird. While the details aren’t all clear yet, what is clear is that things are changing in regards to digital marketing. So, what does Google Hummingbird mean for the future of SEO and content marketing? Here’s what we know so far:
Content must have authority and be useful. More and more over the past year, quality, fresh content that’s useful and informative and that gets shared has become top priority. Content should answer users’ questions, address their needs, and engage the reader. Google also wants to deliver the most relevant results to search queries in the form of content with authority – that is, content that’s trusted, shared via social signals and possesses quality links from relevant sites.
Links can be a good thing – or a bad thing. One thing that has become clear over the past year or so is that when it comes to inbound links, quantity does not trump quality. Now, Google will be watching how your links perform, and the interaction with these links by users of social media. If lots of links are posted on Google Plus or other platforms but are for the most part ignored, it may do more harm than good.
Delivering better results to mobile voice search. Mobile users often ask a question through voice, rather than searching via text. This means users will be using search queries that are longer and more complex. Unlike the old days when search results were based primarily on keywords, today users are asking questions, even keying in longer, more complex queries when using text.
While it all sounds a bit confusing, the focus should be what it has always been, regardless of what people claim to be the “rules” of SEO – delivering great content that addresses readers’ needs and concerns, and entertains or engages enough to be shared with others. Remember to keep the readers’ interests and needs first, and to communicate and share via social media. The rest will follow!
