Having a website built for your business takes time. While we know companies are eager to get a shiny, attractive new website online, it’s important to keep in mind you want your website to work – to be appealing, provide the information potential clients are looking for, be effective in building new leads and customers. It is hard to put an exact timeframe on how long it will take to build a website and launch it. The length of time it takes also depends on your industry, and the scope of your business.
Naturally, you want to launch your new website as quickly as possible. However, having a site ready in two weeks or a month is unrealistic, in most cases (for an effective, functional, SEO-friendly website, anyway). How can you set a timeline that’s realistic? We have a few suggestions.
First, launching a website in a flash is not important; meeting your clients’ needs is. Sure, a dynamic, appealing website is great. That said, if your website doesn’t serve the needs of potential clients, it’s really useless. When setting deadlines for your web design project to be completed, remember that solid businesses are built over time.
Consult a web design expert. There are lots of people who claim to design or “build” websites, but how much experience/knowledge do they really have? Those who are in the web design business and who achieve expected results for clients are the ones who can help you set a realistic timeline. To ensure you’re working with a trusted company, inquire as to why the timeline is what it is, look at their portfolio, and ask how long certain projects took to complete, and the reason for the timeline.
Be realistic, above all. Even website design companies have staff members who may be on vacation, have emergency situations arise, or even have a new baby coming into the family. No one can control external factors, and life does happen. A timeline can be closely estimated, but it can’t be set in stone!
Don’t discount the content! Every website must have great content that informs, educates, answers visitors’ questions, even entertains. Writing content is not easy; while you may love the colors, graphics, and layout of your website, the content is the “meat” of the site; it’s what engages visitors and attracts search engines. All of this takes time!
