Nearly every Atlanta business owner who’s either built a website or had a professional web designer do it form them has heard of SEO or search engine optimization, but what about holistic SEO? That may be a new one on you, but it’s important. Philosophically holistic is an adjective that means “characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.” Now that we have you completely confused, we’ll break it down into simpler terms.
Google uses ranking signals to determine where a website page ranks on the search engine results pages. Of course one of those signals is content, but others include backlinks, a mobile first approach, and technical SEO. Back in the 90s and early 2000’s people could stuff their title tags, headings and pages with keywords, buy 100s of backlinks and call it done. This is NOT holistic SEO – and it doesn’t work today.
Content. From the words on your pages to videos and images, this is how Google determines what your website is about. Instead of keyword density, though, Google is more interested in the user’s search query and intent – and how relevant your page of content is to that search. This is how content becomes holistic. Google wants to deliver the very best UX, or user experience.
Backlinks. These are links that come into your site from other websites, social media, blogs, and other sources on the web. In the “old days” you could simply list your website (with a link, of course) in hundreds of directories. Today that’s a no-no! Incoming links should be from relevant, quality or authoritative sources. Links from poor quality sites or those without a strong domain authority can actually do you more harm than good. Again, it’s about attracting good backlinks through the great content you put out! A natural way to approach backlinks, or holistic.
Technical SEO. Basically, this is the “behind the scenes” stuff, something like the foundation or construction of a home. Technical SEO is the coding, security, architecture, speed and mobile friendliness of your site, and also the user experience it provides.
Which brings us to mobile friendliness. Considering there are now far more users of mobile devices than there are desktop users, the mobile version of your website must be one that users find easy to use and navigate with great content and a good user experience. Mobile IS a ranking signal, so be sure your website is up to speed as Google’s little “bots” will be crawling it to determine where you’ll rank in the organic or “natural” (not paid) search engine results!
Technology and the internet world change so fast it can make your head spin. Thankfully, Atlanta business owners don’t have to keep up with all that’s going on in terms of design, SEO, marketing and other aspects when there are professionals to take care of it for you!
