While there are search engines other than Google, most businesses cater to this search engine “giant,” who changes its search algorithm hundreds of times each year. How can you enjoy high search engine rankings and protect your website from being one of the unfortunate ones to be wiped out by Google on its next whim?

First up, avoid crappy SEO. What is crappy SEO? Over-optimizing web pages for keywords, buying back links that are irrelevant, over-optimization of back links or links pointing to other pages on your own website, content that’s written for search engines rather than real people. In a nutshell, the techniques that were super-effective five years ago are a thing of the past.
Social media. Some people go so far as to claim social media is the “new” SEO, however we know it’s simply a very strong and effective component of your SEO strategy. Sharing and posting great content that users find engaging or useful on social networks is recommended. Google does pay attention to social sharing; after all, if your fans and followers “like,” “re-tweet,” or otherwise share your content, it must be good, right?
Content IS still king, one thing that remains the same. Today effective SEO is all about great content – but not just any old content. Google wants content that really helps those who are in search of answers, content that answers their most pressing questions. Again, creating content for the purpose of stuffing it with keywords and hoping to attract search engines won’t work. Create engaging, useful, fresh content regularly for outstanding results – and remember, what you say in your content can be the BEST sales tool.
Guest blogging should be for the purpose of informing readers on relevant blogs and building your brand and exposure, not gaining links. Guest blogging can be highly effective for SEO when done correctly, or it can backfire big time if you’re simply trying to gain more inbound links.
Search engine optimization can seem like “risky business,” but as long as you keep providing real solutions and answers to real people in the forefront rather than trying to optimize every word for search engines, you will see good results.
