Google’s recent Penguin update left many highly-ranked businesses facing reduced traffic and thus, reduced revenue because of lower rankings. While many of the websites that were targeted were those incorporating “black hat tactics” in their SEO strategies, others that were simply perhaps trying too hard and over-optimizing may have been affected as well. If your business was affected and your once high-ranking website seems to have fallen substantially in the search results, there are some things you can do to regain visibility – and the favor of Google.
The primary focus of the Penguin update is inbound links, namely those that seem unnatural. While it was once good practice to create inbound links that contained specific keyword-rich anchor text, today it’s more advantageous to vary the text in your inbound links. Google’s approach now is one that is more natural; content that flows naturally and is not stuffed with keywords, natural inbound links. Ultimately, Google wants users to have a good experience online, finding information that is original, valuable and useful.
So, what are the lessons learned from Google’s Penguin update?
Most important of all, be relevant. Content should be relevant, pertinent and extremely useful to the searcher. Building communities so that natural links are built is essential. Engaging in social media, blogging, and the sharing of information is essential in becoming relevant in your industry.
Keep things on an even keel. Not too long ago, webmasters were zeroed in on doing everything possible to SEO their sites, which included title tags that were overly dense with keywords, pages that were crammed with keywords, and inbound links that were of low quality – the more links, the better, right? Not today. Offer exceptional content, focus on quality of inbound links, not quantity. Essentially, throw out the guerrilla optimization tactics.
Be transparent and credible. This is easy to accomplish when you focus on the needs of your target audience rather than your own monetary gain. Build trust in your brand, be credible – become an authority in your industry. Create the best possible content, content that your users will want to come back to again and again.
If you have low quality inbound links, get rid of them or nofollow them. Use natural text links, and avoid the over-use of targeted anchor text. Stay away from link networks! And most important of all, focus on your users, keeping in mind that your content should be developed not primarily for machines, but for real humans.
