Not too long ago, many companies would write an article (or have a content writer do it for them) and publish it to dozens or even hundreds of article directories (Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Articles Base, etc.) in order to generate backlinks for SEO purposes. Today, that’s not so effective – and could in fact hurt you instead of help. During the big Google Panda shake up, many article directories lost their high rankings. Essentially, online businesses cannot rely on an article listed in a directory to rank highly, thus leading the searcher to your website link via your article author box. So, how does article marketing work now?
Today, it’s all about quality versus quantity. Sure, you can put an article on Ezine Articles, but syndication is what you want to keep in mind. Is your article valuable and interesting enough that other webmasters in a niche relevant to yours will want to use it on their own sites? Instead of thinking “backlinks from the article directories themselves”, think about how many other websites will want to use your content, thereby creating inbound links from relevant websites. Targeted traffic will also increase when your content is published on relevant high-traffic sites.
Article marketing also includes publishing your articles on relevant sites. For instance, it can be very effective for SEO purposes to guest post on relevant blogs that are considered to be “authority” blogs. Couple this with the power of blogs combined with social media, and you can see outstanding results through articles. Write a great article (perhaps even controversial or humorous), and you could potentially have hundreds of “likes” and “tweets” sharing your article all over the web, depending on the amount of traffic the blog generates.
