Many business owners have gotten the impression over the last couple of years that SEO is dead. The fact is, search engine optimization is not dead, it is different! Without SEO, there is no way that search engines such as Google could deliver relevant results to users in search of products, services, or information. As a trusted Honolulu SEO firm, we want to help small business owners understand the concept of SEO, and how it works today.
Once upon a time, those with websites could load up their sites with the key terms or phrases most likely to attract targeted traffic. Keywords such as “how to make money online” would be found throughout the content, even in title tags, page titles, meta tags, and more. Add as many inbound links from other websites as possible (regardless of whether the links were relevant), and voilà! websites could attract a flood of traffic. The more competitive the Internet became and the larger it grew, the more difficult it was to rank and be found. Today, these strategies are not effective, and may actually get a company’s website banned. So, how does it work today?
Search engine optimization today is about delivering the most relevant and useful results possible to users. Google has completely changed how SEO is done, and in order for companies to remain visible, they must conform.
Content marketing is the most important aspect of SEO today, and involves creating useful, informative, and engaging content on a regular basis and sharing it throughout the web. Content should be so compelling or original that others who read it WANT to share it with their friends via social media, their own blog, even link to it from their own website.
Inbound marketing is a buzzword today, and again involves great content. While links are still important in SEO, today those links should be relevant, and given from others because the page they’re linking to deserves it. This means that you may only have a handful of links, but if they come from relevant, trusted sources it means so much more than having hundreds of “junk” links.
Keywords are still a vital part of SEO, but no longer does Google rank highly sites that are packed with keywords, as this “looks” suspicious even to search engine spiders. The use of keywords sparingly, along with context that supports the use of those keywords, is most effective when combined with amazing content.
Is SEO as important today as it once was? Absolutely, but the way it is implemented is very different from even three years ago.
