Because we are in the business of effective SEO, or search engine optimization, we know the importance of a sound link building strategy – but we also know the tactics that worked a few years ago will get you in deep trouble today. As a business owner, quality inbound links going into the pages of your site from other websites shows search engines that there must be something important there, which helps you rank higher in the search engines.
So, how can you implement link building in 2014 that’s not only effective for SEO purposes, but “safe?” Here are a few pointers from our SEO professionals.
Avoid link exchange programs and link farms. Trading links with every business who wants to exchange links is unnatural – and search engines DO know the difference.
Remember that links should occur naturally. Forcing links used to be the “big thing” in search engine optimization; the more you could gather, the better your ranking. Not so today. In fact, five or ten relevant, high quality links into your site is much better than 500 “junk” or non-relevant, low quality links. Links should come into your site from others who WANT to link to your pages, because of the value or information those pages offer.
Ultimately, links should be driven by outstanding content – content that’s engaging, informative, valuable, even entertaining. Great content on your own website and blog is vital, but look to publish content on other relevant sites who have a large readership. You can tell which blogs have lots of readers by the social engagement levels (how many shares, likes, re-tweets, etc. the blog post has received), whether there are a number of quality comments on the posts, and the brand recognition of a website.
Link out to other content that adds value to your own story. When a website has only incoming links but none going out, it is a clear sign to Google and other search engines that you are consciously building links, which looks unnatural. Link to news stories, articles, and other content that builds on the credibility of the story you are telling, or informs your readers even further about the topic.
Leverage your connections with others in your industry. If you know several business owners who have blogs, write a few articles for them – but again, be sure the content is exceptional AND RELEVANT. Many people go about it the hard way. You don’t have to find ten or 15 relevant sites to post your content to, just a couple will do. It’s about building real authorship within your industry.
These are just a few tips that will help make your link building efforts more effective this year, and for the foreseeable future. Today, link building is definitely harder and more time consuming than it was two or three years ago, but it’s absolutely necessary.
