Many companies who have websites on the Internet operate locally – in other words, they don’t sell their product or service on a national or global basis, but instead in their own backyards, so to speak. If yours is a competitive industry, how can you become more ‘awesome’ online? Local search marketing has become a huge topic over the past couple of years, as consumers tend to search locally when in need of a product or service. Our team of Atlanta digital marketing professionals have a few tips to help you be more ‘awesome’ than your competitors – and rank higher in the search engine results pages as well.
First of all, keep in mind that your sole focus should be delivering the best possible experience to your user, not trying to “fool” Google with underhanded SEO tactics. Essentially, what you need is unique, engaging, informing content, and quality inbound links. Take a look at your competitors’ websites, really study them for a few minutes. Do they look similar in terms of the content on the pages? Do they have many inbound links? This is where you want to do BETTER than them. Better content, more awesome.
The number one most important thing you can do for local search success in 2015 is to analyze your competitors’ websites, and make yours better than theirs. It may sound tough, but you can do it by providing your visitors answers to the questions they have, content that informs and educates, easy navigation to related topics, videos, client reviews, etc. If you were in search of your products or services as a consumer, what would you want to know or learn? This is what you want to provide on your website. Be sure to make it clear why your product/service is better than your competitors’ as well.
A few common pitfalls you want to avoid:
Failing to pack your pages with useful content. Don’t put a sentence or two on your pages and call them done! Your visitors want meaty content – they want to know more about your product/service, and they want to know it now.
Packing your pages with keywords is outdated – and it won’t help you one iota when it comes to ranking in Google. Instead of focusing on content that is SEO optimized, focus on your visitors and what they want.
Make sure you have good title tags. Title tags should summarize your page and include your primary keyword phrase along with your business name. What it should NOT be is a bunch of keywords you want to rank for.
Be sure your title tag, H1 headings, page content, and alt text on images include your city and state for better ranking in local search. If possible, sometimes it’s also a good idea to include this in your site’s URL.
Ultimately, instead of thinking about how to make your website rank higher with Google, think of what all you can do to make it the very best in your industry. The results will follow when you focus on the client!
