Many business owners don’t realize the importance of a website redesign, or know how often their site needs to be updated. A website has a “shelf life,” so to speak – and it’s about three years in most cases. Our Atlanta web designers can explain why this is.
Think back to what websites looked like when you browsed the Internet 20 years ago, or even a decade ago. It’s a little comical actually, when you compare what those sites looked like then to today. Take Amazon for example. Outdated? We’d say so.
At the time, it was amazing – although, the visual appeal left a lot to be desired.
So why does website design change every few years? There are a few reasons. First, a business website that looks outdated often leaves potential customers wondering if the company is still even in business, or if its services or products are as ancient as the website appears to be. Most people leave a website that looks like a relic almost immediately.
Ever-changing technology really determines design trends
Think back to the days when most computers had dial-up internet, and how slow it was. Images weren’t as big a trend back then, as web pages packed with photos took FOREVER to load – and people don’t have that much patience. Today, you see lots of images, infographics, animations, card layouts and more, that engage the user and make a website super appealing – because we have high-speed connections.
Remember not too many years ago when you just hated to have to scroll down pages to see what was at the bottom? Today these types of websites are all the rage due to the use of mobile devices to browse the web. You can only imagine the huge impact mobile has on web design, today; in fact, it’s probably one of the biggest factors.
Do you need to redesign your website?
It all depends. If your website looks current, professional and appealing and is performing well, you may just need to do a few little things like freshen up the content if it’s been a while. Google loves updated, relevant content and the addition of blog posts frequently – and it helps SEO.
Otherwise, you may want to consider a redesign if your company has rebranded, there has been a significant change in the scope of products or services you offer, or if your current design is one you’ve had for longer than three years.
