As Atlanta digital marketing professionals, we know how hard it can be to explain the importance of SEO and how it works to business owners with a website who want to rank higher in the search engines – but we’re going to give it a try! In 2018, there are certain things you must do in order for search engine optimization to deliver the results you want. Here we go!
Make it easy for Google’s crawling little spiders. From your URL to the text, videos, and images on your pages, it’s vital that Googlebot spiders can easily crawl and understand the pages of your site. Otherwise, it’s impossible to index, and nothing else you do will matter.
Primary and secondary keywords your target audience actually uses when searching for solutions, information, products, etc. You have to dig deep when performing keyword research, to ensure you’re sharing the user’s intent. Once you have great primary/secondary keywords and phrases, your content should back them up by serving the intent of your searchers.
Perform a few searches on your own to see what’s relevant in Google’s eyes. What you want to do here is key in one of your keyword phrases and take an in-depth look at what comes back on the search engine results pages. Those sites, and the content that comes back in top results, are what Google thinks is relevant, so you’ll want to see what content others are using to serve the searcher’s intent and even what might be missing. For instance, you may discover something you know your audience wants answers or a solution for, but that these other sites don’t seem to offer. Good for you! A great opportunity to fill a gap and rank high for your efforts.
Develop content that serves the searcher’s intent and blows the competition away. Content is everything today when it comes to SEO, so yours has to be more enlightening, more informative, more entertaining, more share-worthy. A difficult task, yes – but you can have a person or team that’s amazing at creating awesome content take care of this for you. The more your content is shared via social media platforms or linked to from others, the more trustworthy and credible you appear to both search engines and people. Your solution should deliver on the searcher’s goal in a way that no one else’s does.
Meta descriptions and titles should be super-enticing. These snippets of content display in search results, and the more compelling your title/description, the higher the chances searchers will click on YOUR listing. Be sure to incorporate keywords and phrases in a way that captures the searcher’s attention, so they just can’t resist clicking! Throughout all of this, make sure your snippets are relevant.
Be sure to incorporate those primary and secondary keywords you dug so hard for into your text content. You’ll also want to include related keywords, or those that are connected in a way that’s semantic. Sounds confusing, but semantically connected keywords are simply those that give context to the page and provide a clear meaning of your content – it’s a step further in understanding searcher’s intent and improving results accuracy. Google has to know that your content is highly relevant to the goals of the searcher.
Super fast page loading and visual appeal. Whether someone lands on your website using a tablet, laptop, or mobile device, your pages should load super-fast. People don’t have a long attention span, and they want results NOW. Visual appeal enhances the user experience – and security is more important now than ever before, so consider HTTPS, a factor that will continue to be important to Google this year. HTTPS is simply a more secure version of HTTP, which stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.
Know who those people and publications are who can help you get the word out; spread your content; earn quality links; get mentions; help spread your content far and wide throughout social media, blogs, publications, videos, and more. Who are those key players who can take you where you need to be?
SEO is getting more complicated all the time, but you have no choice, other than to follow along if you expect to compete and rank on page one in 2018 (or maybe even the highly-coveted #1 spot on page one)! Hopefully, this SEO checklist will get you moving in the right direction.
