As a trusted Atlanta SEO firm, we know there IS one thing that’s constant when it comes to search engine optimization – change! Given Google’s constant algorithm updates (there were more than a dozen last year alone, and that’s only the ones that were somehow notable or highly publicized), it’s hard for businesses and marketers to know what works, and what may get them penalized.
Here are a few tips from our team to help ensure your SEO efforts are effective, regardless of any algorithm updates Google may implement this year.
Social media marketing that’s focused. Today, consumers expect the brands they trust to engage with them in a way that’s more personal. Learn where your target audience congregates most, and communicate. Don’t try to blast your latest blog post or news on every social media platform out there, just choose two or three so that you can spend more time on those platforms building relationships and brand trust. In focusing more of your time/energy on fewer social platforms, you will build a loyal following – and new leads, sales, etc.
Narrow down your search terms to those that are more precise. Long-tail keywords or search queries are more effective for attracting traffic that is qualified to buy – and they typically have far less competition, so they’re easier to rank for. Broad, general keywords have a huge number of searches, however this kind of traffic isn’t highly targeted. In other words, these broader search terms often don’t result in leads or buyers. Do your homework; understand the buying patterns of your target customer, and it will help you determine which search terms and keyword phrases to optimize for.
Rather than “build” links, earn them with high-quality content. The days of trading links with other website owners or purchasing links are long gone. Today, it’s all about links that are given or “awarded” to your website from relevant sites, because the content on your site earned the link. Make sure every page on your website delivers quality, whether in the form of written text, videos, infographics, or whatever else you have to offer. Engage, inform, educate, entertain. This will get the links you deserve!
Last but not least, make sure your website is designed in a way that’s optimized for mobile traffic in addition to desktop traffic. Responsive websites are essential today both for consumers and search engines, as Google focuses on the user experience in ranking – and sites that are mobile-friendly will rank higher than those that are not.
Trying to keep up with what works in SEO is difficult, particularly for those who don’t really understand all of the complexities of search engine optimization.
