Do you know how to best use social media marketing for your business? Unfortunately, many businesses and online marketers do more to harm their business than increase its success. How? By annoying people instead of interacting. Social media has grown to such a level that more marketers are using sites such as Facebook and Twitter to “pitch” their service/product, hoping to get rich quick, so to speak. This is not how it works, and you shouldn’t look at social marketing as an easy, quick way to advertise when you have a small marketing budget, either.
Social media is just as the name implies – social. This means developing relationships, really interacting with people. Using these sites to gain exposure and build your brand is something that should be done consistently, not just once a week or whenever you have time to “get around to it.” However, you should have a genuine interest in your potential audience – build relationships and nurture those relationships. If you cannot do this, it’s best not to get involved at all. What you want to do is build a solid reputation, which can be done by – you guessed it – minding your manners.
How do you get followers? Be a follower. This is what social media is all about. You have to participate, you can’t simply “open up shop” and hope that customers will come.
Don’t think you’re better than everyone else. Why should everyone else participate, and you just keep to yourself while waiting for everyone to rave about your company, product or service? Be social, and open up to learning from others. You may just be surprised at how much you can learn, and how interacting influences your success.
Avoid spamming! Social media sites are becoming just like email – filled with spam. Those who genuinely want to interact with others have to wade through ankle deep spam – and they don’t like it. Don’t spam your followers on Twitter. Think of it just as you would an email marketing campaign; how many times have you unsubscribed from a list because you were getting too much junk?
When it comes to social media marketing, just be smart. Before you post something, consider whether it is for a genuine and helpful purpose, or if it would be perceived as annoying. Interact!
