Nearly all of us have used the Internet to search for products or information. As a business owner, no doubt you have browsed a few websites yourself. Were they user friendly, or one of those sites with problems such as non-working links or that made it nearly impossible to find what you were looking for? This is one aspect of web design you certainly want to mention to the design company you choose – usability.
Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind when designing your website.
Adhere to the “2 click” rule. People don’t want to click half a dozen times to find the information they want, so have your site designed in a way where visitors can easily access all information within one or two clicks.
Include a sitemap. Not only do search engines (Google in particular) prefer websites with sitemaps, this makes it super-simple for someone to find the information they’re looking for. Sitemaps list every link/page on your site, so users have quick access to the specific page they are looking for.
Keep the focus above the fold. The most pertinent or engaging information should be above the fold, or in other words in the portion of your website a visitor will see without scrolling down. Page tabs and attention-grabbing or critical information should be kept in this section. Visitors typically take only three seconds to determine whether they’re going to stay on your site, or move to another. Make sure yours keeps their attention!
Make your content easy to scan. The majority of visitors to your website won’t read every word on the page; what they WILL do is scan your pages quickly, so be sure to use bold headers, bullet points, subheadings, and small blocks of content to make your content easy to scan and more digestible to the reader.
Ask your designer if a heat map can be installed so that you can see where your visitors are clicking. When you know where your visitors are going on your site, it makes it easier to know what needs to be changed in regards to optimization or improved navigation.
