Unfortunately, many companies who have a website never think about how their website looks to potential new clients and visitors. If your site hasn’t been updated since the 1990s, chances are, what people see when they land on your site is a historical archive. If your website has gone the way of the dinosaur, it’s time to come into modern times with contemporary web design!
Our Atlanta web design experts have a web design best practices to help you bring your site into today’s times.
Appearance DOES matter. If your website still has table-based graphics or flash, time to make a few changes. A colorful site that looks clean and is properly spaced is what you’re after. Clean fonts and alignment are also key. You have three seconds or less to grab your visitor’s attention before they leave to go elsewhere, so make sure your website is visually appealing!
Clear away the clutter. Does your website have tons of pictures, videos, ads, and other “junk” that clutters it up? The more junk, the longer it will take your pages to load – and that’s a bad thing. If you do have a few ads, make sure they integrate seamlessly with your website’s colors and layout, that they don’t stand out and scream “AD!!!” Only put on your pages what will truly benefit your readers.
Simple navigation. Your most important pages should be listed near the top and above the fold, clearly visible so that your visitors can find what they’re looking for – and avoid pull-down menus! Other informational pages can be listed in a sidebar or sitemap. Every page of your website should be accessible within two clicks. People don’t want to “dig deep” for what they’re looking for! Simple navigation makes it easier for search engine spiders crawling your site as well, a good thing in terms of SEO.
Exceptional content. Your content should be informative, relevant, valuable, and easy to digest. When we say easy to digest, we mean your content should be broken up in smaller paragraphs, with bulleted lists, bold fonts to emphasize really important areas, sub headers, etc. You can bet that if someone lands on a page of your website that’s one long, continuous paragraph running on and on, they’re going elsewhere.
If your website hasn’t had a facelift since the 90’s, or even in the last five or so years, it’s time! Things have changed. At EBB Web Design, our Atlanta web designers have changed along with the times – we know what works!Google+
