In today’s ever-changing SEO world, link building has become one of the most difficult aspects of search engine optimization. Links must be natural, or in other words, given, because the content on your website earned it. If no one’s linking to you, you need to ask yourself – is your website link worthy? Our Atlanta SEO team has a few pointers to help you understand why your website may not be obtaining inbound links.
Non-functioning media. When an important page, say for example a page on your website that explains how a product works, contains a video that doesn’t play, other site owners are not going to want to link to that page. Totally understandable – would you want to link to a page where your reader could not get the information if he/she were to follow the link?
Lack of sharing capabilities. Today, most blogs include social sharing buttons on each post, so that readers of the blog can promote the article if they read something they really find interesting, informative, or useful. If your blog doesn’t include social sharing capabilities, it gives the impression you don’t promote your own content. Why would others want to share (link to) content that you yourself apparently don’t believe is share worthy? Include social buttons on your blog, and you’ll most likely get relevant links to your most compelling content.
Lack of fresh content. Let’s face it; why would anyone want to link to a site whose content has become stale, with no new blog posts or pages for months or even a year or more? Fresh content invites quality links, especially when the content offers a fresh perspective or is engaging or helpful to the reader.
Too heavy on the advertising. Today, industry leaders want to link to pages that are filled with great content, not distracting ads that make viewing the content difficult. Keep the ads to a minimum if you simply have to have them.
Content that is the same old thing rehashed. Original content that inspires, educates, and answers questions is what gets linked to. If you don’t have fresh content that isn’t scraped from other websites, you have nothing new to offer. While it is quite common for people to offer a different version of information they have found elsewhere, be as unique and original as you possibly can, or add an interesting twist to make your content link worthy.
Other reasons your site isn’t attracting links may be that your website design is way outdated, you don’t have photos that give visitors a visual of your story, or your writing is downright atrocious in terms of grammar, spelling, or sentence structure. Basically, if you share great content that people learn from, enjoy, or that solves a problem, it will get shared via inbound links.
