For online businesses or anyone who owns a website, analyzing your website traffic is critical to success. As trusted Atlanta digital marketing professionals, we want to talk about Google Analytics, and why you should be tracking your website traffic. Knowing who is visiting your website, what pages they are visiting, how long they’re staying, and other vital information can help you improve your website’s performance, not to mention help you gather more leads and paying customers!
Setting up Google Analytics on your website doesn’t cost a thing, but once you have done this what is it exactly that you want to look for?
The data you look at probably won’t be really helpful until you have had analytics installed on your website for at least a month. The longer you’ve had it installed on your site, the more meaning you can get from the data. Here’s what Google Analytics will help you with:
How many visitors you have had to your website over the span of a day, week, or month, and how many of the visitors are unique. Unique visitors are those who are first-time visitors, or who have never been to your site before.
How is your website converting? If you are getting 1,000 visitors per month who are spending a couple of minutes on your site but you are not getting any new leads or phone calls, something is wrong. This should alert you to the fact that something needs to be changed on your site to encourage more sign-ups or phone calls.
What is your bounce rate? A bounce rate is the percentage of people who arrive at a page on your website and leave from that same page without interacting (for example, not clicking through to another page, signing up for a newsletter, etc.) A high bounce rate, for example 75% or higher, is not a good thing. Why are visitors not interacting on your website? While it could be that the user actually found the information they needed on that page, there are many other reasons – site design, incorrect set up of Google Analytics, or you only have a one-page site.
Google Analytics gives you a huge amount of information, way too much to discuss it all here. You can see all of your traffic and determine what other sites are sending the most traffic to your website, how your content marketing is affecting traffic, what pages visitors landed on initially when they came to your website, and much more. Ultimately, this helps you in your marketing strategy, as you can see what’s working best for you and what isn’t.
