If you’re an Atlanta business with a website, no doubt in developing that website you’ve learned (maybe more than you ever wanted to know) about keywords, SEO (search engine optimization), etc. What you may not know is how much SEO and keyword optimization has changed over the years, which impacts where your website stands in the search engine results. While we don’t want to get too technical, we thought you’d be interested to know if there may come a point in time when search engines (specifically, Google) outsmart marketers.
Keyword optimization was all the rage at one time – and it worked. Not so much today, although keywords are still important. Google found over the years that a keyword-centric approach simply didn’t work. Instead of users finding the solution, product, or information they were looking for, they found web pages packed with keywords. Above all else, Google wants users to have the best possible experience – and that means finding the relevant answers and useful information they’re looking for, not a bunch of keyword-packed pages that read like so much mumbo-jumbo.
While keyword optimization may not be so important these days, what about SEO? Because SEO best practices change every time Google revises search, it makes us wonder whether we can “stay ahead” of the game – but we can. How? By knowing that, in the future, the context of a user’s search will matter more than the keywords they actually type in. It’s all about the growing adoption of mobile search and increasing complexity of semantic search.
What does this all mean, in a nutshell? Basically, marketing that is effective will depend less on link building and technical SEO, and more on useful, quality content that is written in a way that engages the reader. Ultimately, there will be no way to “game” Google when it comes to SEO.
As technology and SEO changes, so will inbound and content marketing. It’s all about developing the most engaging, exciting content that goes far and above what the competition offers. It’s not about the marketer, but about the consumer. As a whole, marketing isn’t going anywhere, it’s simply about the way we approach it – and knowing that you really can’t “outsmart” search engines. Concentrate on delivering the best possible user experience, and less on keyword optimization and technical SEO. Keep the consumers’ needs first and foremost when developing your website and content, and you won’t find your business at the bottom of the heap the next time Google rolls out a new version of search.
